Whether you’re a “snowbird” heading south for the winter or you’re planning a big move during the sunny summer holidays, timing is everything when it comes to shipping your vehicle. In a country as vast as ours, the changing seasons don’t just affect what we wear – they completely change the logistics of car shipping in Canada.
At Able Auto Transport, our fleet moves through everything from July heatwaves in the Okanagan to February blizzards on the Coquihalla. Each season brings its own set of “must-knows” for a smooth experience. Here is how the calendar affects your car’s journey.
Many people think winter is the hardest time to ship, but it’s actually a very popular season – especially for those escaping the cold. However, it does require a bit more legwork.
Roads across the provinces are heavily salted in winter. If you choose open transport, your car will likely arrive with a thick coat of road grime. If you’re shipping a high-end vehicle or just want to keep it pristine, this is the time to consider enclosed transport.
You need to ensure your antifreeze is rated for extreme sub-zero temperatures. A battery that is “just okay” in the summer might completely die in a Prairie cold snap.
Blizzards and icy mountain passes can cause safety delays. We always prioritize the safety of your vehicle and our drivers, which means we might wait out a storm rather than risk a transit accident.
Summer is the peak season for car shipping in Canada because it’s when most families choose to relocate.
Because everyone is moving once school is out, carriers fill up fast. We recommend booking at least 3–4 weeks in advance during June, July, and August to secure your preferred dates.
While there’s no snow, extreme heat can be tough on tires and batteries. We suggest checking your tire pressure before pick-up, as heat causes air to expand, and over-inflated tires on a long haul aren’t ideal.
Without the threat of road closures due to snow, transit times are generally more predictable and faster. It’s the easiest time for door-to-door service in more remote areas.
If you have flexibility, the “off-peak” months can be a hidden gem.
Watch out for the spring “pothole season.” Our drivers are pros at navigating rough roads, but the extra vibration can be hard on older cars.
Once the summer rush dies down and before the winter snowbird surge begins, you can often find great availability and very reliable schedules.
No matter the weather, the biggest risk in car shipping in Canada is using a broker who doesn’t actually own their trucks. When a storm hits or a schedule shifts, you want to talk to the people who are actually holding the steering wheel.
Because we own our fleet and manage our own logistics, we can give you real-time updates and honest advice based on the actual weather we see on the road. We’ve seen it all, from coastal rain to mountain ice, and we know exactly what it takes to get your car home safely.
Thinking about shipping your car soon? Give us a call and let’s talk about the best timing for your route!
